Downey’s Court Reporting Program prepares students to become licensed Certified Shorthand Court Reporters as a Voice Writer or a Steno Machine Writer in the State of California. The skill of writing words on a stenograph machine or repeating words verbatim is unique and in high demand. Voice writers repeat words verbatim using a software program called “Dragon” along with CAT (computer-aided transcription) software. Court Reporters can choose to work in the legal community as a deposition reporter or in the courthouse, provide CART services for the hard of hearing, TV captioning, and much, much more. The average court reporter earns over $85,000 per year. Although voice writers use a different method than machine writers, they both produce a transcript.
